We had a special class today where we invited all the parents in class to work with their child on basic martial arts and fitness drills and helped them be a better coach for their own child. All the kids had fun and it was good to see the parents and kids get some bonding time working on drills together.

Whether or not a parent has any martial arts experience, they are still able to be excellent coaches for their kids with their martial arts training. At Tanny Academy of Martial Arts we teach parents various tips for helping their kids when training at home. Mom or Dad may not be able to demonstrate all the Taekwon-do techniques, but attending all those classes and watching their son or daughter practice a pattern or self defense technique over and over really help them also learn to recognize some of the movements and techniques and what to look for.
For a student to maximize their training, they should be practicing their patterns, self defense and techniques at home a few times a week spending 5-15 minutes each practice session, more if they are able to dedicate the time and effort.
With kids especially, parents should supervise all home training and practice sessions to avoid any injuries for your child.

The success of a martial artist depends on many factors - the student, the instructor(s), fellow classmates/martial artists and his/her family. In life, success is seldom achieved alone. There is no exception for the martial arts. For a student to earn a black belt and become a leader and a good role model for other students, they must rely on their "martial arts circle of influence" and not just on their own abilities. This team of people all work together to ensure the student's success in earning his or her black belt.
What is the martial art circle of influence? According to Stephen Covey, author of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a person’s “circle of influence” is the group of people he or she associates with and who impacts and shapes his or her life. To gain the most out of life we should pay attention to who we keep in our circle as relationships are one of the top factors that shapes our lives and influences our daily decisions. The martial art circle of influence includes all the people who will directly and indirectly affect the training and maturation of an inexperienced martial artist into a black belt leader. ...

According to the Chinese Calendar, 2011 is the year of the Rabbit. The rabbit in many Asian cultures signifies luck. The Rabbit is also a sign of the moon while the Peacock is the sign of the sun. Together, the Peacock and the Rabbit (or the sun and the moon) represent day and night - the yin and the yang. According to ancient Chinese traditions, those who make a wish during the year of the Rabbit will have their wish granted.
